Boost Donations This Gift Aid Awareness Day 2025: #TickTheBox
This Gift Aid Awareness Day on 9 October 2025, charities across the UK are coming together to spread a powerful message: a tick is worth 25% more. Through the Charity Finance Group’s #TickTheBox campaign, we’re reminding donors and charities that Gift Aid is one of the easiest ways to make every pound go further, and Cybertill’s technology is here to make the process effortless.
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities to claim back an extra 25p for every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer, at no extra cost to the donor.
Example:
If a supporter donates £10 and ticks the Gift Aid box, the charity receives £12.50. That’s £10 from the donor plus £2.50 from HMRC.
How does it work?
-
The donor must be a UK taxpayer.
-
They tick a Gift Aid declaration (paper or electronic).
-
The charity submits a claim to HMRC.
Gift Aid can be claimed on:
-
Cash and online donations
-
Donated goods sold in charity shops
-
Regular giving such as standing orders
It’s a simple tick, but one that can unlock millions of pounds in extra income across the sector. Yet many donations are missed simply because people forget or don’t know to tick the box.
Why Gift Aid Awareness Day Matters
Charity Finance Group’s annual campaign gives charities the tools to remind supporters to opt in. The importance of doing so cannot be overstated. Gift Aid is not just a formality; it is a vital source of income that allows charities to do more with every donation.
Every year, an estimated £560 million in eligible Gift Aid goes unclaimed across the UK. That is money that could fund frontline services, community programmes, medical research, shelter, education, and more. And all of it comes from donations that have already been made. With Gift Aid, a £20 donation becomes £25. That uplift can make a huge difference at scale.
In previous years, charities saw a measurable increase in Gift Aid uptake after promoting the day. This proves that awareness drives action. But awareness alone is not enough.
This year is about turning visibility into results. With the right technology, staff training, and clear messaging, your charity can recover thousands of pounds in unclaimed revenue without asking supporters to give anything more.
